Starsign Horn is the Best Short Sword

Starsign Horn	Your Special triggers a defensive stance. The next attack is blocked and countered, dealing +20% damage to the attacker and reduced damage to nearby enemies.

Starsign Horn is arguably the best Short Sword for multiple reasons. While your special can no longer be used as an immediate AoE damaging attack, it's now replaced by a stance that will counter with the weapon's circular special attack if you're hit during the said stance.

What Makes the weapon incredibly good is the stance counter's effect. Not only does it hit all the enemies around you, it also hits the enemy that dealt the damage to you. It doesn't matter if the enemy is at the farthest end of the room against you, the counter will deal damage to them. This lets you defeat damage bosses during their attack patterns rather than wait for them to be vulnerable.

Endless Sword is a Great Alternative

Endless Sword	Your Special becomes a fast, piercing attack that hits additional times based on your combo, with each extra hit dealing 20% damage.

Endless Sword is a very simple weapon, your special becomes a thrust attack that deals a single instance of special damage per regular attack you use before it.

It doesn't count the attack finisher so your basic combo becomes a triple regular attack into a special. It's a very high-DPS sword since you're dealing 6 instances of damage per 1 combo.

Merchant's Short Sword is a Great Starter Weapon

Merchant's Sword	After performing a Special Finisher, deal +60% damage for 5 seconds.

The Merchant's Sword is your starting sword but its main effect can carry you from start to finish. It's a passive 5 second buff which means that after your first combo, you can use the full damage duration of the buff to complete your next combo, making it a permanent damage buff.

While it's not effective against bosses due to their several invulnerability phases, its more than enough to clear every dungeon room in the game.
